The biggest hurdles come from fears, changing needs and time pressure. This is why experts from all over the world come together at IHSI every year to present different intelligent systems and discuss approaches to develop the human-machine interfaces. In 2019 the conference took place from 7 to 10 February in San Diego in California. The conference attracts mostly computer specialists and experts in human-machine interaction. There is a broad array of research areas related to this topic like military technology, aviation, assisting Smart Homes, robotics, telemedicine / telecommunication, e-learning, artificial intelligence and automotive.

The conference was opened by Prof. Azad M. Madni who held a fascinating presentation on the topic of adaptive cyber physical human systems. He gave an outlook on the achievements of the 21st century and which research areas will gain importance in the future. He covered a wide spectrum from standard medical devices to areas like smart manufacturing or autonomous driving. His speech was followed by 148 presentations on a wide range of topics in 32 tracks that were partly running in parallel.

Daniela Elisabeth Ströckl, researcher at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences and member of the Research Unit AAL and the Institute for Applied Research on Ageing (IARA), presented a model based approached to implement a multimodal human-machine interface for an assisting Smart Home. The “model based” approach is based on generalized meta models that are concretized through instantiation resulting in specified models for individual scenarios. Combined with an AI unit, the developed system can learn about the behavior of the assisted person, individually execute the instantiations and thus offer support that is adapted to each individual person. Thanks to its multimodality different interaction units can be connected to the system including devices for input interactions (keyboard, touchscreens, microphone, cameras for gesture command) or output interactions (speakers, screens, rays for navigation). This allows persons to interact with the system according to their physical and mental abilities / impairments or according to individual preferences which according to a recent study leads to higher system acceptance.

Further details on the work can be found in the following paper:
Ströckl, D.
