At this conference, we presented and demonstrated our Adaptive Streaming Framework (ASF) and how it can be used in smart city environments. We had the pleasure of discussing our approach with other experts and researchers, as well as members of various standardization entities.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-60c8e45 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"60c8e45\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4db0102\" data-id=\"4db0102\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e505295 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e505295\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: var(--sydney-text-color)\">For our team, Monday, July 4, 2023, marked the beginning of the conference. This is one day before its actual start because, in addition to the presentation, we also showed a demo, which had to be prepared ahead of time. The demo consisted of the following key components:<\/span><\/p><ul><li>A remote-controlled toy car on a track to simulate moving objects inside a smart city.<\/li><li>A commercial consumer-grade WiFi router and a switch for connecting the components. Usually, we do this inside our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/5gplayground.at\/\">campus 5G network<\/a>. However, due to a lack of it at the ETSI premises, we decided to use conventional network connectivity.<\/li><li>Three\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developer.nvidia.com\/embedded\/jetson-nano-developer-kit\">NVIDIA Jetson Nano boards<\/a>, each with a dedicated camera connected:<ul><li>An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelrealsense.com\/lidar-camera-l515\/\">Intel RealSense LiDAR Camera L515<\/a> is used for acquiring a depth image of the smart city scene.<\/li><li>An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arducam.com\/product\/arducam-2mp-ov2311-global-shutter-mono-visible-light-camera-modules-for-jetson-nano\/\">Arducam Global Shutter Mono Camera<\/a>\u00a0is used for acquiring detailed imagery of selected parts of the smart city scene.<\/li><li>An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aja.com\/products\/u-tap-hdmi\">AJA U-TAP HDMI<\/a> grabber and a GoPro action cam connected to the grabber via HDMI are used for acquiring an overview of selected parts of the smart city scene.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>A commercial business laptop for receiving and evaluating the image data from the Jetson Nanos.<\/li><li>A commercial business laptop for monitoring the network traffic between all the components of the demonstrated system.<\/li><\/ul><p>An overview of the demo setup can be seen in Session by the Director General of ETSI, Luis Jorge Romero as well as other speakers in the impressive Amphitheatre. Here, our researcher Christoph Uran could outline the demo setup and give the audience some more detailed background information on our Adaptive Streaming Framework. The ASF focuses on two principles that are important for future smart cities.<\/p><ol><li><strong>Network-efficient streaming of data<\/strong>: Typical smart cities contain a variety of different sensors, ranging from simple temperature sensors to very throughput-intensive cameras. The ASF enables the streaming of such complex data. However, the processing entity (<em>ASF Consumer<\/em>) can dynamically request data from the generating entity (<em>ASF Producer<\/em>) via a controlling entity (<em>ASF Registry<\/em>). This leads to a massive reduction of the transmitted data because only the important parts of the camera image need to be transmitted in the requested quality and interval via the network.<\/li><li><strong>Sensor virtualization<\/strong>: Using high-dimensional sensors such as imaging cameras and LiDAR cameras enables extensibility which is not possible with conventional single-purpose sensors. For example, a camera can be used for monitoring parking spaces in &#8220;normal&#8221; situations. In emergencies, it can be used for aiding in the deployment of emergency vehicles.<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f495167 technical discussions on the ASF and its integration into the ETSI MEC ecosystem will prove highly valuable for our future research in that Role of MEC (Multi-access Edge Computing) in IoT Digital Transformation&#8221;. In this session, Helmut W\u00f6llik, the head of our research group, presented some more background information on the ASF and its possible integration into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsi.org\/technologies\/multi-access-edge-computing\">ETSI MEC ecosystem<\/a>. Standards like ETSI MEC enable a closer coupling between applications (e.g. smart city applications) and modern telecommunication networks such as 5G. Thus, it is possible to bring applications (full or in parts) very close to the clients and not exclusively into a remote cloud data center.
