Wietersdorfer Alpacem GmbH is a group of companies in the building materials industry with regional roots in the Alps-Adriatic region and 29 locations in Austria, Italy and Slovenia. Ingenieurb\u00fcro Bergmeister was founded 35 years ago by Prof. Konrad Bergmeister (Professor of Structural Engineering at BOKU University Vienna since 1993). Ingenieurb\u00fcro Bergmeister offers planning services in all important engineering disciplines and is represented by almost 150 employees at seven locations in Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Bergmeister’s engineers and experts have worked on over 4,000 projects in Europe over the past decades. Many innovations have been driven forward in collaboration with universities or companies. Examples include the cable-tensioned glass roof at Juval Castle by Reinhold Messner, the seamless university building in Brixen, the most beautiful soccer stadium in Linz nominated in Austria, large industrial buildings in Germany and Italy and the pedestrian and cycle bridge in Eichst\u00e4tt, Germany, which won the Ernst & Sohn Engineering Prize 2024. Bergmeister was also involved in important infrastructure projects, such as the Brenner Base Tunnel (the longest tunnel under construction in the world), where Prof. Bergmeister was jointly responsible for the planning, approval and construction, or the north-west bypass with the K\u00fcchlberg Tunnel in Merano, where Bergmeister was involved in the planning and construction management as a responsible partner. CUAS is a university of applied sciences with regional roots and an international focus. It is active in the key areas of health and social affairs, economics and various technology topics in engineering and construction, including architecture. Its core tasks lie in the areas of study and teaching, applied research, knowledge transfer and continuing education. More than 165 researchers with around 250 cooperation partners and a research volume of \u20ac8 million in 2022 provide new insights and impetus from science for business, industry, politics and society. Four research centers and 19 research groups conduct research with the aim of addressing socially and industrially relevant topics. The deliberate interlinking of teaching and research gives students the opportunity to become involved in projects at a scientific level at an early stage, right up to doctoral level. CUAS is experienced in the project coordination of international R&D projects with up to 12 partners and a project volume of \u20ac2 million. In 2022, a research volume of \u20ac8 million in co-funded projects was managed, comprising 120 R&D projects. The Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture has extensive experience in working on topics related to the construction industry, ranging from material development to the validation of structural components. The ISO 9001-certified construction laboratory (https:\/\/www.baulabor.at\/) is equipped with high-quality technological components for testing and monitoring the behavior of structural components. In the past, it has been involved in the development of climate-friendly, high-performance cementitious materials as part of several research projects, including the FFG-funded CON_FIT (https:\/\/projekte.ffg.at\/projekt\/3014945) and HiPerComp (https:\/\/www.ffg.at\/sites\/default\/files\/allgemeine_downloads\/strukturprogramme\/coinaufbau3as_hipercomp.pdf) projects. In addition, cooperation with a large number of industrial partners from the construction sector, including ASFINAG, \u00d6BB, voestalpine, SIKA Austria, Hilti and Halfen, took place as part of R&D projects and teaching activities. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Friul Julia Appalti S.r.l. (FJA) is wholly owned and controlled by Roberto and Michela Nadalutti and has been providing environmental services such as the collection, transportation, storage, treatment, recycling and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous municipal and special waste for almost 40 years.<\/p>

FJA has its own vehicles for carrying out collection services at customers’ premises (registration no. TS00046 in the National Register of Environmental Officers) and facilities for treatment, recovery and disposal, including:<\/p>

The landfill has been in operation since 1991 and has had a combined heat and power plant for generating electricity from biogas since 2021, which is currently in operation and connected to the national power grid.<\/p>

The plant has been in operation since the early 1990s. Over the years, the plant developed from the original Plant 1 to the later Plant 2 until 2010, when it underwent a complete restructuring, both administratively with the merging of the various original licenses into a unified overall plant, and technically\/structurally with the demolition of the outdated structures and the construction of new halls, facilities and rooms for the staff. <\/p>

The plant has a total area of approx. 11200 m2, of which approx. 4300 m2 are covered (next to the plant there is another urbanized industrial area of over 42700 m2, which belongs to another company of the Nadalutti family and is currently used as a vehicle park, storage area for boxes and various equipment).<\/p>

As a building materials testing laboratory and quality assurance laboratory for many shareholders and customers in the concrete and asphalt sector, we can contribute practical and normative expertise in the building materials sector to the project. We have carried out a number of projects in the recycling sector in recent years and are now seeing a great deal of movement in this sector. It’s not so much a question of whether building materials will become more environmentally friendly, but how far and how fast. We have a certified EPD tool with which we can quantitatively evaluate various optimizations. One problem that should not be underestimated is the normative restriction or minefield of contradictory standards and guidelines. We could go deeper with this project and provide a detailed overview of the normative and technical (Italian) foundations, always from the perspective of an alpine environment with extreme climatic and structural requirements that exist across borders. An exchange on possible solutions or dead ends is essential in this phase of rapid implementation or even construction of new ecological standards. In our view, one aim of the project would be to create know-how in order to provide building material manufacturers, construction companies and planners alike with clarity in the area of environmentally friendly and durable concrete structures. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture (DPIA) and the people involved in the project have relevant experience and skills in the project topics. In addition to several scientific articles published in major civil engineering and architecture journals, most of the people are involved in the national projects PNRR INEST and RELUIS. Recently, the organization’s officer for the project has conducted several studies (also presented at an international conference in 2022) on the effectiveness of replacing waste material in the concrete mix. The research experience and skills of all those involved in the project are usually passed on to students as part of the teaching activities.
