MCA

The department MCA (Management of Conservation Areas) advances technology-enabled monitoring of speciesand habitats, studies human-nature interactionsand assesses their impacts on societal developments.The department integrates field ecology, environmental monitoring, and stakeholder engagement to inform conservation practices and policy. The department also houses the UNESCO Chair onSustainable Management of Conservation Areas. The Chair links the ICEB with the institutions and policies ofthe United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Key focus areas and sub-teams:

BioMONITec: Technology-based detection of plantsand animals; data analysis and interpretation; developmentof modern methods and new sensor systems.

Conservation Governance (CoGov): Management ofprotected areas, OECM (Other Effective Area-BasedConservation Measures), and ecological restorationmeasures.

EnGeCo (Environmental Genetics & Conservation): Environmental genetics to detect organisms in soil,water, and air; development of molecular methods.• WildSci (Wildlife Sciences): Human-wildlife interactions,disturbances, habitat restoration, and strategiesto modify human practices to reduce biodiversity loss.
