OECM – Other effective area-based conservation measures

As part of the Horizon Europe RIA project “Bio-Capital” we support a case study on the protection, restoration, adaptation, and sustainable use of Alpine forests in Austria, including the identification of a potential OECM in Carinthia in line with IUCN guidelines. The work is grounded in key EU policy frameworks: the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 sets ambitious targets to expand protected and strictly protected areas and underscores the importance of sustainably managed, biodiversity-friendly forests, while the EU Forest Strategy for 2030 reinforces this direction by defining closer-to-nature forest management as a suite of practices that promote biodiversity-friendly and adaptive forestry and demonstrate its benefits. In parallel, the expanded Regulation on European environmental economic accounts introduces forest and ecosystem accounts—based on the UN SEEA-EA—providing the legal foundation for consistent Natural Capital Accounting to measure and value changes in ecosystem stocks and conditions; at the same time, it acknowledges the methodological complexity of biodiversity metrics and the challenges of integrating them into financial decision-making, especially for public goods. This policy grounding also builds on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which informs the overarching direction of the case study. We are supporting the developing process of an integrated framework that brings together geospatial data, monitoring, and natural capital accounting, supported by feasibility analysis and the development of management and governance concepts for a potential OECM designation. The UNESCO Chair at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences provides scientific consultancy, methodological supervision, and ongoing project support.

Werkstatt Innovation Natur #landwirtschaft

Werkstatt Innovation Natur #landwirtschaft (WIN) is a program for innovative nature conservation in agricultural landscapes, implemented by Blühendes Österreich – BILLA gemeinnützige Privatstiftung in cooperation with Impact Hub Vienna and BirdLife Österreich, with the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Management of Conservation Areas at FH Kärnten providing independent scientific documentation and accompaniment from 2025 to 2028. Its goals are to systematically document test areas, provide annually updated deep dives for four pilot projects, and transfer findings into research, teaching, and the professional community. The approach combines programwide documentation based on surveys and submitted materials with annual site visits, drone flights, interviews, and a final scientific synthesis and presentation. The evaluation examines whether seed funding catalyzes lasting change by assessing longterm effects, contributions to rural innovation, and structural shifts among project holders to inform program development.

SchneeLi

In the Malbun area of Liechtenstein, an avalanche blasting system is being built in summer 2026 to protect citizens from avalanches. Therefore, in spring 2026 a monitoring program was set up using traditional point count and transect surveys in combination with technology-based bioacoustic monitoring with Song Meter recorders. The main focus is on disturbance-sensitive species such as the rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta), black grouse (Tetrao tetrix), rock partridge (Alectoris graeca), mountain hare (Lepus timidus), and chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra). The goal of the project is to evaluate the species composition in the area that may be affected by the construction and operation of the system, and to detect future changes in species composition and patterns of space use. Based on findings of the initial survey, a long-term monitoring system will be established.
Together with DI Monika Pfeifer and DDr. Veronika Grünschachner-Berger, ICEB at CUAS are working on the project; our main focus is on bioacoustics analysis and establishment of the bioacoustics monitoring system for future use.

Interreg Craft2Biodiversity – A sustainable economy through biodiversity in the craft sector

The Craft2Biodiversity project examines the intersections between the skilled trades, biodiversity and sustainable development. The aim is to identify practical approaches that help craft businesses actively contribute to the conservation and promotion of biodiversity. To this end, traditional craft knowledge, technical expertise and specialist knowledge of nature conservation are being brought together. The focus is particularly on the links between biodiversity and energy efficiency, infrastructure, product improvement, new business models and social sustainability in the craft sector. The first step involves a stock-taking exercise and trend analysis to examine current craft practices in terms of their impact on biodiversity. This is followed by creativity workshops with pilot businesses to develop and implement concrete measures. Pilot businesses then develop and test innovative measures to promote biodiversity in creativity workshops. The project’s findings will be incorporated into practical training modules and a guide designed to help craft businesses embed biodiversity as an integral part of their sustainable operations.

ENTURE-CE Enhancing Environmental Education and Sustainable Tourism for Natural Areas Resilience in Central Europe

ENTURE-CE is a transnational cooperation project that strengthens environmental education and sustainable tourism to increase the resilience of natural areas in Central Europe, under Interreg Central Europe (Priority “Cooperating for a greener Central Europe,” SO2.4) and led by Eurac Research. At its core, the project develops and tests a transferable Transboundary Biosphere Reserve (TBR) model that enables coordinated planning, governance, visitor management, and communication among contiguous protected areas, turning border regions from lines of fragmentation into spaces of cooperation and providing a replicable blueprint for integrated governance of biodiversity and sustainable tourism across other cross-border landscapes. The Alpine pilot connects the interconnected areas of Julian Prealps Nature Park (IT), Triglav National Park (SI), and Dobratsch Nature Park (AT) to jointly test and validate this approach through a pilot action and a Tested Operational Framework, ensuring long-term implementation via formal cooperation mechanisms. To secure durability beyond the project, ENTURE-CE foresees a trilateral Policy Agreement among these parks and complementary Letters of Intent among partners, formalising joint governance and continued collaboration for the Trilateral Transboundary Biosphere Reserve .

BioGuard – Biodegradable forest protection systems based on bio-based materials

BioGuard develops biodegradable forest protection systems based on bio-based polymer formulations combined with natural fiber-based fillers and additives. The aim is to create forest protection solutions that meet technical requirements during use and then biodegrade in the ecosystem without leaving harmful residues (e.g. microplastics). Our team is monitoring the degradation and effectiveness of the materials and products to ensure optimal usability and properties under real world environmental conditions.
